Prayer, What Is It?

What is prayer for you? Do you believe that God hears your prayers? Do you believe that your prayers are answered? Do you think that your prayers to God have to be long and full of words?

I can remember as far back as elementary school praying to God for things. You know, the prayers of, "The class picnic is Friday. Please let the weather be nice for that day." And then waking up to thunderstorms on the morning of the picnic and being mad because God didn't answer my prayer. Then as the day went on, the skies cleared and the day was nice.

So? Did He answer my prayer? Of course, He did. It is just that sometimes things are not always the way we think they should be.

Since that young age, I have spent a lot of time praying. I prayed for a husband, throughout most of my teens. I prayed to be able to get pregnant with children. God answered the husband prayer with T and blessed us with three boys.

As each of the boys were in school, I prayed that, with the Lord's help, they would catch on quickly and easily to things. Two of my boys are really great at math. The other child, excels in music. Neither of those talents are something that I possess.

Throughout my marriage, there have been very hard times. Times that caused me to hit rock bottom and not even want to get out of bed. I prayed for strength to manage through each day. I also focused a lot of prayers on asking the Lord to help me to forgive T and to be ok with who I am. I asked, a lot, for reconciliation to take place, but even if it didn't, I asked for His will to be done. The Lord has answered all of my prayers. He granted me strength each day. He helped me to be able to forgive T and to learn to be ok (to accept, to like) who I am. He also brought about reconciliation between us that only He could do.

So, what exactly is prayer?

Believe it or not, it does not have to be a huge, long, drawn out speech. God knows who we are. He knows what is on our heart and what needs we have. All He asks is that we share them with Him. Carry on a conversation.

I tell you, if someone was to ever look in on me, from the outside, they would see me constantly talking. I am sure that they would think I had gone off my rocker. But, in actuality, I am just talking to God and sharing with Him my thoughts and concerns as I go throughout my day.

Prayer is a means of communicating with God. It does not have to be long and drawn out. Sometimes One word is all you need to say.

There have been times that all I could manage was, "Jesus help!"

Pray! God hears you.

The following are verses to remind you that God hears you, when you pray. Choose one to meditate on, absorb it, and let it sink in. May you be blessed from your time with His Word.

1 John 5:14-15 NIV

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.

Matthew 6:8 NIV

Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Isaiah 58:9a NIV

Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.

Dear Father, thank You for Your loving mercies and compassion. Thank You so much that I can come to You with confidence and ask You for anything. When I ask for something that is according to Your will, I know that You will hear me, no matter what I ask from You, and I know that I have received what I have asked from You (1 John 5:14-15). Father, I trust that You already know what I need even before I ask (Matthew 6:8). Thank You for answering my call; thank You for being so close to me that when I cry to You for help, You say, "Here I am" (Isaiah 58:9a). Father, I love You and I praise your Holy name. Amen.

Your Turn:

What is prayer for you?
Do you believe that God hears your prayers?
Do you believe that your prayers are answered?

Grab a notebook and spend some time writing a letter. This letter will be to God. Consider Him your friend. You are filled with anticipation to be able to share everything with Him. Now write. He wants to know.

Moving Forward:

Moving forward with where I feel the Lord is leading me. The direction of the blog is changing, not by much, but it is changing. I am feeling lead to focus more on Bible verses and on prayers.
