How to Memorize Long Passages

Do you struggle with memorizing scriptures? Did you know that it is often easier to memorize verses, and for them to stick, if you memorize long passages?

Are you willing to try to memorize a long passage of verses?

I have picked out, with the Lord's help, Psalm 121. It is 8 verses total. I will break it down in to two verse chunks for each week. This means, we will be working on memorizing Psalm 121 for 4 weeks.

Are you up for the challenge?

Supplies Needed

Notebook

~~ I prefer notebooks that I can open up and that will lay flat. However, the one I am using is one that I already had on hand. The notebook you choose does note need to be fancy. It just needs to have paper that you can write on :).

Index Cards

~~ I have a spiral bound set of index cards that I am using. Use what you have on hand and use what works the best for you.

Pen(s) and/or a pencil

~~ I am very much a girly girl. I prefer as much pink, purple and teal in my things as I can get :). So I use G2 ink pens. This allows me to rotate between the colors. The point, here, is that you pick your favorite writing instrument and use it.

Bible and/or Bible app

~~ Use your Bible or Bible app to look up Psalm 121

Are you ready? Let's go.

Step 1 ~  Read through all of Psalm 121, out loud, at least one time every day.

Psalm 121 NIV

I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord , the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.

Step 2 ~  Write out (yes, pen and paper) Psalm 121:1-2 . You will write out these verses at least 5 times every day throughout the week.

~~ Why writing it out helps me... I think it is the repetition. First off, I gain so much when I slow down enough to write out the verses. But writing it more than one time, helps it to stick. I keep thinking back to when the boys were little. They needed to learn spelling words or they needed to learn vocabulary words. The best way to help them memorize those things was to write it out over and over. This. Is. The. Same. Thing.

Step 3 ~  Write out Psalm 121:1-2 on an index card

~~ Yes, more writing, but you can do it.

Step 4 ~  As you do random activities, during your day, try to recall Psalm 121:1-2, from memory.

~~  What do I mean by random activities? Like when you wash the dishes, dry the dishes, empty the dishwasher, do the laundry, etc. Random activities are things that keep your hands occupied, but your mind is free to recall things like verses.
~~ If you have trouble remembering something, glance at your index card.

Step 5 ~  When you have spent time with these verses and you start to feel comfortable with them, try to incorporate them into your prayers.

~~ How do you incorporate Psalm 121:1-2 into a prayer?

Prayer:

Dear Father,

During these uncertain times, I find myself looking up to the mountains and asking where does my help come from? I am filled with wonder because I know that my help comes from You and You are the Maker of heaven and earth. Thank You for being in control. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Psalms 121:1-2 NIV

I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord , the Maker of heaven and earth.

Prayer For Healing

Are you, or someone you know, hurting or sick? Where do you turn when the world seems to be suffering?

I don't know about you, but things seem so scary right now. Things are breaking my heart.

My heart is heavy when I think of those that are struggling through this new way of life. My heart aches when I think of those who are sick and not certain of their healing.

My heart ....

I turned all of this into the following prayer for myself, for you, for our world.

Prayer:

Dear Father,

Thank you for always being there. Thank you for each breath that you allow me to take. Thank for being in control.

Father, I lift up the hurting, the sick (the world) and place each of them in your loving hands. Heal them, Father, and they will be healed. Save them and they will be saved. I praise your Holy name (Jer. 17:14).

Father, your word says that if anyone is sick (and right now there are so many in our world who are suffering) to cover them with prayers of faith and they will be made well. You will, personally, raise them up. You will also forgive any wrongs that they have committed against you (James 5:15-16).

Father, it is my prayer that we, as a people, will be able to humble ourselves under your mighty hand and to trust that you will lift us up when the time is right (1 Peter 5:6).

Your word says that if we listen to you and follow your commands you will not bring on us the diseases that plagued the Egyptians. You promise to heal us (Exodus 15:26).

Help us, as a people, to humble ourselves and seek your face in prayer. Help us to turn from our wicked ways, Father. We do so need your help and guidance in this. Your word promises that when we turn from our wicked ways, you will hear us. Not only will you hear, but you will heal our land (2 Chronicles 7:14).

Father, thank you for sending Jesus to walk, as a man, among us. Thank you for His willingness to go to the cross. Thank you for His willingness to take our pain and to bear our suffering. He was pierced for our ( for my ) transgressions. He was crushed for our ( for my ) iniquities. He endured the punishment. He endured our punishment ( my punishment ), so that we could enjoy peace. It is by His wounds that we, that I have been healed (Isaiah 53:4-5).

Please help us to endure, in our sufferings, Father. Your word promises that You will wipe away every tear. Your word promises that there will be no more death, mourning, crying or pain for the old way of things has passed away (Rev. 21:4).

Father, I am claiming every promise. Thank you for not abandoning us to our own devices. Thank you for always being there. I ask all of this according to Your will. In Jesus' name, Amen.

The following are the verses that I used in the prayer.

Jeremiah 17:14 NIV

Heal me, Lord , and I will be healed; save me and I will be saved, for you are the one I praise.

James 5:15-16 NIV

Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

1 Peter 5:6 NIV

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.

Exodus 15:26 NIV

He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord , who heals you.”

Isaiah 53:4-5 NIV

Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

2 Chronicles 7:14 NIV

if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Revelation 21:4 NIV

‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
