Devotional: Find Your Joy

Are you struggling today? Are you dealing with depression? Do you feel all alone with your trials?

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

James 1:2-3 NIV

This verse always catches me a bit off guard. Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds.

No matter what you are facing at this moment, I want you to stop and just think about those words.

What's The Difference?

This verse is one that makes you wonder what exactly is the difference between joy and happiness.

The feelings of happiness are something that we seek, desire, and even pursue. We long for happiness to be part of our every day lives.

On the other hand, joy is already a part of who you are. It is an emotion, an attitude of the heart. A breaking forth of the Spirit, once you have accepted Jesus into your heart.

Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy

You might find yourself struggling through a trial right now, but you have the Lord by your side. You can reflect on everything that He has done for you in the past as you cling to Him all the more for His strength to help you endure the trial.

This past week, I have been sick with a cold, that I caught from T. Things were really bad one day and I almost had to go to the hospital. Thinking about it makes me feel panicky.

I could be someone that dwells on, " oh poor pitiful me. I feel horrible. Why can't I just feel better?" However, I have chosen to be thankful for the things that the Lord has blessed me with during this cold.

Take your thoughts off of "self" and place them on the Lord. Give Him thanks always. And you will find your joy. What is even better, others around you will notice your joy in the Lord as well.

Let's Pray:

Dear Father,

Thank You for being who You are. Thank You for always being with me. Father, I know that no matter what struggles I might face, You are still there with me. Please help me to stop focusing so much on myself and my problems and to give You thanks for all that You have done. Help me to find my joy; in You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV

give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
