Facing Anxiety With Scripture

Is anxiety a part of daily life? Do you fear failure, worry over the future?  Do you often live with a pit of uneasiness in your stomach?

Anxiety and I are not strangers. I do not want to think of us as friends, but we go way back. As far as I can remember, I have always feared failure.

According to dictionary.com anxiety means distress or uneasiness of mind caused by fear of danger or misfortune; a state of uneasiness or tension caused by apprehension of possible future misfortune, danger, etc; worry.

Worry Should Be My Middle Name

You know the feeling you have in the pit of your stomach when your child finally starts school? Yes, you feel proud for them. However, as mothers, you also worry. Did I pack enough for his lunch? Will he make friends? Will he be made fun of? Is he even ready for school?

Take all of those feelings and then apply them to other aspects of your life. Like making dinner... Did I cook the right meal? Did I make enough for everyone? Will it taste okay? Did I forget an ingredient? Oh my gosh, what if I burn it?

These are all the types of thoughts that go through my mind at any given time.

Let's read Psalm 121, pray over it and hold it close.

Psalm 121:1-8 ESV

I lift up my eyes to the hills.
From where does my help come?
My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand.
The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life.
The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

Prayer

Dear Father, I lift my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from You, Father, the maker of heaven and earth. Father, I know that You will not let my foot be moved. You keep me safe because You do not slumber. Lord, You are the shade at my right hand. You will not allow the sun to strike me by day or the moon by night. You keep my life safe from all evil. You keep watch over my going out and my coming in from this time until forevermore. In Jesus' name, Amen.

My Thoughts

To me this means that when I am in trouble, my help comes from the Lord who does not slumber. He is at my right side protecting me. He keeps me safe from all evil and watches over me as I go out and come back in. This brings me comfort and hope.
