In marriage, you will have times of struggles. You might find that you and your husband get on each other's nerves. Maybe you argue with one another over things that seem insignificant. This is all normal. What matters is how you handle things when these moments arise.
It was about a week ago now, I walked in to the kitchen. Tim was preparing something for his dinner. I mentioned, "I need you to do me a huge favor." His response was, "What do you need now?" Okay, I was not feeling too good at the time, but to me, what he said to me was, "Leigha, you are such a bother, what do you need now?" I even told him that is how his statement made me feel and I would try not to be so needy.
That moment was not a pleasant one for me, but I did make things more than they needed to be. He has since let me know that he does not think I am a bother because he loves doing things for me. He wants to help shoulder the burdens I carry in our relationship. I love that he said that, using words that I use here on the blog with you. That let me know they were from God.
Stew Is For Dinner, Not Conflict
What matters is how you handle conflict when it arises. Normally, I would have taken what he said to me and held on to it. I probably would have stewed over it for a while and then I would have pressed it down.
I would have allowed those careless words to have festered in to anger and then suppressed it until it became depression. Or, as I was still in my festering mode, I might have lashed out saying things that I did not mean.
When conflict arises in your marriage, do you carefully face it head on? Or do you stew quietly over it?

Leigha, I love the verses and the prayers to go with them. I have learned after 18 years of marriage that what I hear my husband say is not at all what he meant to say. I have now started asking him if this is what he said, and most times he will not even recognize that he said what he did. That is where intentional communication comes into play.
ReplyDeleteYou have seemed to hit the nail on the head :). Taking the time to slow down and ask the questions. To check and see if what you heard him say is what he said. Thank you for sharing that.
